Yara to reallocate capital from abandoned USD 2.9 billion Louisiana clean energy project
B910化工消息:July 1 - Norwegian fertilizer giant Yara International announced it will reallocate capital from its halted Louisiana Clean Energy Complex project worth USD 2.9 billion. The Louisiana project was planned to build a large-scale clean ammonia production facility using autothermal reforming technology to produce low-carbon ammonia with a designed annual capacity of 1.2 million tons. Located in Louisiana along the US Gulf Coast, the project aimed to leverage abundant natural gas resources and carbon capture infrastructure to supply the North American green ammonia market. However, faced with cost overruns, changing policy environments, and market demand uncertainties during the project development process, Yara had previously decided to halt the project construction. Yara stated that the reallocated capital will be prioritized for maintaining and upgrading production capacity in its core fertilizer business, optimizing its existing low-carbon ammonia project portfolio, and developing more economically viable clean energy projects. The company will continue to evaluate investment opportunities in the North American green ammonia market but will adopt a more prudent capital allocation strategy. Clean ammonia as an important pathway for decarbonizing marine fuel and the fertilizer industry has attracted significant investment in recent years. However, multiple large-scale green ammonia projects globally face delays or cancellations due to high costs and unclear subsidy policies. Yara strategic adjustment reflects a rational return occurring in the clean ammonia investment boom, with companies focusing more on project economics and capital efficiency.
